Do you want to experience what it is like to be a pilgrim, but only have a few days? Do you want to experience the unique feeling of the many pilgrims who, just like you, are at the start of an adventure? Then walk St Jean Pied de Port Pamplona in 6 days. St. Jean Pied de Port is the starting point for many pilgrims from all over the world. During your pilgrimage you cross the Pyrenees, cross the authentic Basque Country and end in Navarra’s capital Pamplona, famous for its bull run and its hilly landscape.
Your camino Frances starts in St Jean Pied de Port Pamplona. A beautiful little French village where you immediately feel the energy of the camino de Santiago! The narrow streets, red and white buildings and beautiful location at the foot of the Pyrenees makes the walk St Jean Pied de Port Pamplona an ideal starting point for your pilgrimage.
Time to put on your walking shoes. Today your camino brings you from St Jean Pied de Port to Orison. That is a short stage, but do not underestimate it. It’s a steep and tough stretch, but the view is priceless. Enjoy the Pyrenees at its best. Many pilgrims walk to Roncesvalles in one stretch. Of course you can. But if you ask us, it’s a great pity. And not necessary. The stage in the Pyrenees is one of the most beautiful of the whole camino Frances. That is why we choose to take two days. In Orison, a taxi will pick you up and take you back to your accommodation in St Jean Pied de Port Pamplona.
After a good breakfast, another beautiful day on the Camino Francés awaits you. The same taxi will take you back to Orison and from there you walk further on the Camino de Santiago across the Pyrenees to Roncesvalles. Even today you go up a few kilometers further and cross the border of France with Spain. You walk across green mountain pastures and the cattle are your best friend along the way, until you reach the highest point of the mountain range. You can already see the valley from Roncesvalles from here. And so after that a tough descent on the caminoroute follows. We recommend taking the less steep variant. Roncesvalles is the end of your stage today. Do not forget to attend the special mass for pilgrims in the evening.
The next day you will leave Roncesvalles and make your way to Zubiri. Hopefully your muscles didn’t suffer too much on the caminoroute yesterday. Because the first part of the stage is still quite flat, but after that you cross two beautiful mountain passes. On the way it is definitely worth stopping in one of the many bars for a cafe con leche and tortilla. Through dense beech and oak forests you descend further, along the river Arga, to the small village of Zubiri.
Today you will set foot to Pamplona, the city famous for bullfighting. The Arga River will show you the further the way. Although you don’t have to be afraid of getting lost. The camino Francés is very well signposted. Follow the yellow arrows, that’s all you have to do. Kilometer for kilometer you notice that you are again more comes into civilization. Until the city walls of Pamplona loom up before you. A final climb takes you to the old city gate and then you continue walking in the beautiful old center of the city.
After a good breakfast, a taxi will take you from the hotel in Pamplona back to your starting point in St Jean Pied de Port Pamplona.
The Camino Francés is a very varied camino. From the Pyrenees in St Jean Pied de Port Pamplona, the grain fields in the Pamplona region, the flat meseta between Burgos and Leon to the green forests of Galicia. All these beautiful landscapes pass you by at a slow pace. The camino Frances is also ideal for a shorter pilgrimage. Do you have 2 weeks? You then walk the last 100 km to the Cathedral of Santiago and that is enough to pick up your Compostela from the pilgrimage office.
