Overview

8-days Camino del Norte map from Bilbao to Santander

Bilbao, cultural capital of Northern Spain with its stately Gothic buildings and Guggenheim museum is the starting point of your Camino del Norte. You leave the city via the 15th century Devil’s Bridge and follow the Camino del Norte map along the Rio Galindo to the coast. Your Camino del Norte starts in the Basque Country. But on the way you cross the border and continue walking in Cantabria. Besides the unique coastline and idyllic fishing villages, the local cuisine is – a sensation.

And the route of the Camino del Norte map? Sometimes it runs across the beach, then high above the cliffs. During this pilgrimage route your eyes will be short. Breathtaking cliffs of the rugged Cantabrian coast, beautiful, and the marshes of Santona, one of the most important breeding areas for waterfowl in Europe.

Enjoying the beautiful views over the ocean, you will eventually reach Santander via the Camino del Norte. This beautiful port city is a worthy conclusion to this fantastic walking tour. And definitely worth staying an extra day by the way…

Have you walked from San Sebastian to Bilbao before? Then it is nice to continue….

Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

Program from day to day Camino del Norte map

Day 1: Arrival in Bilbao or Santander

Bilbao, cultural capital of Northern Spain with its stately Gothic buildings and Guggenheim museum is the starting point of your Camino del Norte de Santiago. You can fly to Bilbao or to Santander (you can take the bus to Bilbao or we will arrange a transfer with a taxi).

Day 2: Bilbao – Portugalete 14 km

Would you like to visit the Guggenheim before you start your Camino del Norte map? Or stroll through the small streets of the city? You can. Because today you only have a short stage ahead of you. You leave the city and follow Camino del Norte map along the Rio Galindo to the coast. Via the banks of the Galindo River you reach the famous suspension bridge of Portugalete.

A crossing is recommended, a unique experience. Portugalete is the final destination of this first stage.

Camino Del Norte De Santiago

Day 3: Portugalete – Castro Urdiales 28 km

Today you walk along the coast during your Camino del Norte map. You leave Portugalete behind and walk via a pleasant cycle and footpath to Pobeña. Via the coast you then arrive in the village of Onton. Here you cross the border between the Basque Country and Cantabria. Do you see the differences? After a few small climbs (the view of the Atlantic Ocean is beautiful, I promise!) you arrive in Castro Urdiales. Castro Urdiales is very worthwhile.

Be sure to visit the beach, the harbour, the historic city center and enjoy the delicious cuisine in the evening. Oh yes, do you think 28 km is too long? With a short transfer we can easily shorten this stage.

Portada Castro Urdiales

Day 4: Castro Urdiales – Laredo 24 km

Another beautiful walking day ahead. Your Camino del Norte map takes you today from Castro Urdiales to Laredo. Again along breathtaking cliffs of the Cantabrian coast. Your first stop will be in Cerdigo. Be sure to visit the Romanesque church and the old mansions of the village. The Camino del Norte crosses another river: the Aguera River. In Liendo you can see the first examples of the Indianos architecture, so characteristic of this region. They are a kind of palaces built by Spanish emigrants who became rich in the Americas.

You will spend the night in Laredo. Tonight there are certainly all kinds of fish and shellfish on the menu.

Day 5: Laredo – Noja 15 km

How nice! At the beginning of the stage you cross the bay with a ferry to Santona. The boat departs approximately every half hour and you do not need to book in advance. Please note: the boat does not operate during the winter months and you must take an alternative route. In winter it is unfortunately not possible to cross the bay and you are forced to take an alternative – and less popular – path.

Today you have an almost flat stage during your Camino del Norte map, but again with beautiful views. Don’t forget to take pictures! From Berria you climb up to Punta del Brusco for a magnificent view over the coast. The last part of this stage goes over a deserted beach. Then come to your Noja, your final destination for today.

Day 6: Noja – Guemes 14 km

Ready for another walking day on the Camino del Norte map. After Noja you go inland. You pass the small village of Meruello. After crossing a medieval bridge, over the Soloranzo River, you will return to the coast. There are the beautiful cliffs again and while enjoying yourself you continue to Guemes. You will stay there overnight. Off to Santander tomorrow…

Pueblo Guemes Camino Norte

Day 7: Guemes – Santander 14 km

Today a short stage that takes you from Guemes to your final destination of this walking tour, the city of Santander. From Guemes you first walk towards the town of Somo, on the other side of the bay of Santander. Today you can also opt for an alternative route that runs closer to the sea. This is 3.6 km longer than the official route, but is definitely recommended.

To reach Santander, take the boat the last part. Santander is a city that is completely unknown. Which is a pity, because Santander is a typical Spanish city where you can do many fun things. Santander is a port city with kilometers of sandy beaches and a pleasant center.

Santander is a large city that you can divide into the northern and southern parts. In the north you will find the beaches and peninsulas. In the south lies the old center and the harbor. A visit to the cathedral is definitely recommended!

Day 8: Back home

Your Camino del Norte map is over. After breakfast you can enjoy the city of Santander for a while before your journey home begins. Do you want to extend your stay in Santander? Or explore the coast of northern Spain with a rental car. Let us know.

Or maybe you’ve got a taste for it and want to continue walking to Gijon? Or even Santiago de Compostela? Why not. We’re happy to help.
