Overview
The long awaited Camino de Santiago in short stages is here! Enjoy this easier Camino de Santiago in just 12 days. Amazing hotels and hostels will be your accommodation in this part of the French Way. Get amazed with the Spanish food and discover the north of Spain!
In WAW Travel we have different options for this Camino Frances route so have a look!
The city of León is one of the jewels along this Camino de Santiago in short stages. Discover this Roman city, which was the capital of a very important kingdom during the medieval period. Visit the magnificent cathedral, the Casa Botines designed by Antonio Gaudí and enjoy the famous free “tapas” in the Barrio Húmedo, the historic centre of the city.
This first step of your Camino de Santiago in short stages is a nice and gentle introduction to your adventure. You will say goodbye to León and start walking the French Way. Is the shortest stage during this easier Camino de Santiago but don’t be too confident! You will have to walk for a good amount of time by road and trails.
Today you will cross at least four different villages until reaching Hospital de Órbigo. You will walk along paved roads and trails through the landscape from the north of Spain so don’t miss the chance and make some photos to show to your family and friends!
Once in Hospital, you should take a walk around the historic centre of the village and it’s famous medieval bridge, it will surprise you!
Time to visit another jewel of this Camino de Santiago in short stages! Today the walking is similar to yesterday’s stage but you will visit Astorga, one of the oldest Roman cities all over the Iberian Peninsula. Nowadays it is a very small city in decline but has some amazing buildings like a unique cathedral, one bishop’s palace designed by Antonio Gaudí and a Roman museum.
In Astorga you have almost every service so take advantage of it. You should try the “Cocido Maragato”, a traditional and tasty chickpea-based stew that will restore your energy!
Another beautiful day in your Camino de Santiago in short stages! Today you will be walking parallel to the road and you will see a lot of signals so it’s difficult to get lost. The path is fairly flat so it’s effortless if you are used to walking.
You will cross several villages so you can stop if you want to rest while having a coffee or whatever you need. In Rabanal there is a special dinner waiting for you!
Today’s route is one of the hardest in the Camino de Santiago in short stages. You will go uphill first, climbing around 400 metres but with a smooth slope and later you will go downhill for a while. The descent is steeper than the ascent, and longer so don’t be too confident or your knees could pay it.
You have one spot in this stage that it’s a mandatory stop, the “Cruz de Fierro”. It’s an ancient column in which every pilgrim must put a stone at the base as a tradition.
Easy and relaxing stage to give you a breathing space. Today you will visit Ponferrada, a city with every service and a wonderful Templar Castle. It is the second most important city in the province of León so you should go for a walk here to see the castle and some modern architecture like the energy museum or the Rosaleda tower.
The rest of the stage will be a beautiful walk between green mountains and some nice villages.
Another beautiful day in your Camino de Santiago in short stages! Enjoy the beautiful landscape of “El Bierzo”, the region where you are, because tomorrow you will be in Galicia!
Today’s stage has lots of ups and downs through the path but nothing you cannot defeat. Villafranca is a nice place to rest for a while and has every service.
This is your first stage in Galicia, the region where Santiago de Compostela is! You will pass the frontier between León and Galicia and then you will arrive at O Cebreiro, a Galician village near the frontier. Be careful with this stage because you will go uphill a lot of time, ascending more than 900 metres high until you reach O Cebreiro.
Today the path goes through ancient beautiful green forests and typical Galizian villages with lots of church buildings built in medieval times along the Camino.
Talking about landscape, it’s a fantastic stage to do some awesome photos for your socials if the weather is good. Some people could think that you are in Ireland with those green fields and mountains!
You have two options here, the north path or the south one. The south path is longer so we are going to choose the north one because we are doing the Camino de Santiago in short stages but you can do whichever you prefer.
This is your last stage in your Camino so enjoy it as much as you can!
Time to say goodbye to your Camino de Santiago in short stages! Or maybe not… You can continue your adventure until Santiago de Compostela if you want!
Don’t hesitate to ask us any questions you may have here!

We have designed this experience trying to do 20 km at most but there are some stages where you have to walk a little bit more because there are few accommodations along the way.
You will sleep in rural hotels and hostels along the way.
You walk with your backpack. You will need good walking shoes and depending on the season you could need warm clothing to avoid the cold. But don’t forget some lightweight clothing and your flip flops to rest! During the day you need enough water, something to eat, sunscreen and a raincoat. Additionally you can take a walking stick but it’s not necessary.
You can contact us anytime 24/7. We will see how we can help you.
