Camino Inglés sailing & walking: an adventurous and sustainable pilgrimage

Experience the Camino Inglés in a unique way: depart from Amsterdam by sailing boat, sail via England to A Coruna and walk from there to Santiago de Compostella in 4 days

May 21 – May 26, 2025
September 27 – October 2, 2025

A tall ship Twister departs from Amsterdam via England to A Coruna. From there you walk to Santiago de Compostella in 4 stages. A journey at the crossroads of faith, history, sustainability and adventure. The Twister is a sailing training ship, everyone is involved in sailing as much as possible. First the ship sets sail for the idyllic harbor town of Cornwall where we make a stopover and take English pilgrims on board. Then you cross the Bay of Biscay and get to know the long waves of the Atlantic Ocean. You arrive in A Coruna, where you disembark and start your pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The sailing trip is provided by FairFerry and you can find more information about it here.

About the Camino Inglés

The Camino Ingles is the historic pilgrimage route traditionally traveled by pilgrims from Northern Europe, especially Great Britain and Ireland. In the past, pilgrims arrived by boat at the ports of Ferrol or A Coruña, and continued their Camino Ingles to Santiago on foot. They walked along the rugged coastline, passing historic towns such as Pontedeume and Betanzos, before heading inland across the green countryside and forests of Galicia. On the way to Santiago de Compostela and its famous cathedral.

Day program walking from A Coruna to Santiago de Compostella

Day 1: Arrival in A Coruna

After arriving by boat you will stay in a hotel in A Coruna and you can still enjoy the city. Tomorrow the continuation of your pilgrimage begins.

Day 2: A Coruna – Sarandos 22 km

You start this first stage in the old town of A Coruña. The route, which covers almost everything in the city, is pleasant and virtually uneventful. Once you reach O Portádego, start descending towards O Burgo, following the estuary and promenade. Later, in Sigrás, it is interesting to stop to see the church, Iglesia de Santiago de Sigrás, where a pilgrim hospital was located.

Day 3: Sarandos – Hospital de Bruma 10 km

Today you exchange urban environments for a green, rural and sparsely populated area. Yet it is a simple route with a low level of difficulty. The only complication is at the end of the stage, with the climb to the 400-meter high Peito peak, which will take you to As Travesas, where you will join the pilgrims doing the Camino Inglés from Ferrol. Once the climb is over, the destination for the day, Hospital de Bruma, awaits you a few kilometers away.

Day 4: Hospital de Bruma – Sigüeiro 24 km

This stage of the Camino Ingles is a gentle walk compared to the two previous stages. 24.8 km separate Bruma from Sigüeiro, a route that runs on both paved roads and country roads. In contrast to the previous stage, you will encounter many villages with facilities along the way. It’s actually not strange, because you’re getting closer to Santiago de Compostela. The day ends in Sigüeiro. In this place you can visit the medieval bridge that crosses the Tambre River.

Day 5: Sigüeiro – Santiago de Compostella 16 km

From Sigüeiro it is 16.5 kilometers to the Santiago Cathedral of Santiago the Compostels. Today’s route has some gentle climbs and descents. The first part of the stage goes through a rural environment, through lush forests. During the last part you approach the city of Santiago de Compostela. The energy that the tower of Santiago Cathedral gives you will be enough to complete these last kilometers of the stages on the Camino Ingles.

Day 6: Back home

It is already the end of this unique pilgrimage. Today you return home. But maybe you want to stay an extra day in Santiago? Let us know.

FAQs

Do I need to be an experienced walker?

The route is quite easy and doable for an inexperienced hiker. A basic walking condition is required.

Will I get a Compostella when I arrive in Santiago?

To obtain a Compostella, you must have walked at least 100 km. If you leave from A Coruna, you will not reach 100 km and you are not entitled to a Compostella. If you also follow the walking route in England, the pilgrimage office may decide to give you a Compostella.
