As often as possible, the WAW team also likes to explore breathtaking hikes around the world – those that really give us the “waw” effect. Iceland’s most famous hike, the Laugavegur, is said to be one of the most beautiful hikes in the world. Say no more, I thought! After having lived in Iceland for half a year, it was no question that I would find some time to see whether this famous trail could live up to its reputation. Finally, in the second half of June, I had exactly the right amount of time – a good week to complete this trek. It was, however, tempting to walk a bit more than the Laugavegur, so I decided to add another short hike, the Fimmvörðuháls trail, to fill my time. I packed up my tent and a week’s worth of food and embarked on this journey into the Icelandic wilderness.
Where are the Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls trails?
The Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls trails are located in the south of Iceland, both situated in the Icelandic Highlands. The Laugavegur trail begins in the geothermal area of Landmannalaugar, traversing through rugged and remote landscapes to reach Þórsmörk.
Þórsmörk, also known as Thorsmork, is a picturesque valley in the Icelandic Highlands, situated between the glaciers Tindfjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, and Eyjafjallajökull (yes, these are the real names and we didn’t just make them up as tongue twisters). Fun fact: yes, it is named after THAT Thor, the Norse god Thor. Þórsmörk (Thorsmork) is renowned for its lush landscapes, birch forests, glacial rivers, and dramatic mountain views.
The Fimmvörðuháls trail extends from Þórsmörk to Skógar, passing through highland terrain and between two glaciers. These two trails offer hikers an immersive experience in the wild, unspoiled beauty of Iceland’s highland region.
How long are the Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls trails?
The Laugavegur trail’s section from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk covers approximately 55 kilometres (34 miles), while the Fimmvörðuháls trail connects Þórsmörk to Skógar along a 25-kilometre route (15.5 miles). Together, this forms a continuous 80-kilometre (50-mile) trek featuring dramatic waterfalls, volcanic landscapes, and scenic mountain views. The trail is not easy, so it’s realistic to prepare for a minimum of 4 hiking days, but one might as well stretch it to 6-7 days to keep it really comfortable.

Preparing for the Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls hikes
Preparing for the Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls hikes requires careful planning to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. The best time to hike these trails is during the summer months, from late June to early September, when the weather is more favourable. Hikers must decide whether to stay in the FÍ mountain huts or camp along these huts – wild camping in Iceland is generally not allowed. Keep in mind that huts offer basic shelter but lack electricity, so bringing a portable battery is essential. I personally managed with one battery but this depends on how much you are willing to give up using your phone. I usually had it on while hiking and turned it off for the night.
Although simple dry foods can be purchased at the huts, it’s advisable to bring sufficient food and snacks to maintain energy levels throughout the trek. And the most important thing: Iceland’s weather can be unpredictable, so packing plenty of waterproof and warm clothing is crucial, as temperatures can drop – and yes, it can even snow! But do not worry – with the right preparations, you’ll be safe to hike, and should you want to be even more comfortable, luggage transfer is also possible to arrange on these two popular treks.

How to get to the starting point of the Laugavegur?
The starting point of the Laugavegur trail is Landmannalaugar and there are a few options to get to the trailhead.
You can take a bus from Reykjavik: buses depart from the BSÍ bus terminal in Reykjavik and take around 3 hours to reach Landmannalaugar. Booking bus tickets in advance is recommended as they can sell out, especially during peak season. I personally took the Landmannalaugar Highland Bus and was very happy with the service.
It is also possible to drive to Landmannalaugar, but keep in mind that the roads are rough F-roads that require an experienced driver. Parking at the trailhead can be limited, so this option is less recommended unless you have a plan for getting back to your car. Regardless of the transportation method, make sure to check that the roads and facilities at Landmannalaugar are open for the hiking season, as they are only accessible from June to September.
What is it like to hike the Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls trails?
After having hiked similar terrains in Sweden, I felt somewhat prepared for both the beauty and challenges of the Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls trails in Iceland. However, I was surprised by the intensity of both! The trek from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk along the Laugavegur trail was a mesmerising blend of geothermal areas, colourful mountains, and serene valleys. Each day brought new and stunning vistas, from the vivid rhyolite hills to the tranquil Álftavatn lake. Reaching Þórsmörk, surrounded by glaciers, filled me with a profound sense of accomplishment and wonder. And guess what, I was also warned about an upcoming windstorm, so I decided to take a day off and sheltered in place in the beautiful Þórsmörk – key takeaway: always talk to the local warden about the weather conditions before starting your daily hike!
Continuing onto the Fimmvörðuháls trail, between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers, the volcanic terrain and breathtaking waterfalls were truly awe-inspiring. (or should I say, WAW-inspiring?) Despite the changing weather, which ranged from sunshine to snow, it was truly amazing to explore Iceland’s raw and unspoiled natural beauty.
Overall, the trek was demanding but deeply rewarding, testing my physical endurance while creating unforgettable memories. It was an adventure that surpassed my expectations, leaving me with a profound appreciation for one of the world’s most extraordinary hiking destinations. 10/10, I can highly recommend!
