Camino de Santiago Finisterre & Muxia

Discover this unique pilgrimage route along the Camino Finisterre, starting in Santiago de Compostela and leading westwards to the dramatic Atlantic coast of Galicia. Unlike all other Camino routes, this one begins in Santiago instead of ending there, making it a special extension for pilgrims who want to continue their journey after reaching the cathedral.

Please note that walking to Finisterre does not grant you a Compostela, because you do not finish in Santiago. If you want to know more about how to obtain the Compostela, read our article here. However, both Finisterre and Muxía offer their own certificates, which you can obtain by showing your pilgrim passport.

What to know about Finisterre and Muxía?

Finisterre — a symbolic end to the journey

Finisterre, once believed to be the “End of the World”, has deep spiritual significance. In the Middle Ages, pilgrims often continued here to watch the sunset over the ocean, marking the true completion of their Camino. Today, many pilgrims still visit the lighthouse and the coastline to reflect on their journey, enjoy the Atlantic scenery or participate in symbolic rituals. The views are breathtaking: waves crashing on cliffs, endless horizons and pristine beaches.

Muxía — the quieter sister of Finisterre

Muxía sits a little further up the coast and offers a more tranquil experience. Its rocky coastline, fishing harbour and powerful spiritual heritage make it a beautiful alternative finishing point. Many pilgrims consider Muxía the perfect place to end their Camino in serenity.

Camino Finisterre

Camino de Santiago to Finisterre — with an optional extension to Muxía

The Camino Finisterre consists of a 6‑day route from Santiago to Cape Finisterre. If you wish, you can add one or two additional walking days to continue along the coast and reach the beautiful fishing village of Muxía.

At WAW we currently offer a 6-day hike from Santiago to Finisterre and an 8-day version that continues all the way to Muxía.

This Camino is ideal if you want a taste of the pilgrim lifestyle or if, after arriving in Santiago, you simply haven’t walked enough yet. Only a small number of pilgrims continue beyond Santiago, which is a pity, because the peaceful trails to Finisterre and Muxía are among the most beautiful in Galicia.

Both the Camino Finisterre and Camino Finisterre & Muxía take you through beautiful landscapes, small Galician villages, and lush green countryside. The route is quite gentle, without steep climbs or technical sections, making it accessible for most walkers. Along the way, you’ll enjoy the typical gastronomy of the region. The nature here is serene and abundant — a wonderful contrast to the busy final kilometres of the Camino Francés. One of the most memorable moments is the stage toward Cee, where the Atlantic Ocean appears suddenly in front of you. Many pilgrims describe this as one of the most emotional moments of their entire Camino.

6‑day Camino from Santiago to Finisterre

In 6 days, with 4 walking days, this route leads you through charming places such as Negreira, Olveiroa and Cee before reaching the legendary Cape Finisterre — once believed to be the actual end of the world. Standing by the lighthouse, with the ocean stretching endlessly in front of you, feels like a symbolic closing chapter to your Camino.

8-day Camino from Santiago to Finisterre and then to Muxía

From Finisterre to Muxía is roughly 30 km. You can walk it in one long day, or divide it into two shorter stages if you prefer a gentler pace – at WAW we offer the latter version. This means we add 2 more walking days to the 6‑day Camino from Santiago to Finisterre, but of course if you’d like, it is possible to do it in one extra day as well.

Arriving in Muxía feels special in its own right. Many pilgrims choose to end their journey in this peaceful fishing village with a powerful connection to the sea. The Sanctuary of Nosa Señora da Barca, perched on the rocks, is one of Galicia’s most meaningful pilgrimage sites.
